What a significant quote thus far in To Kill a Mockingbird? Why is this quote important? Be sure to follow our quote analysis 4-point rubric: State, Paraphrase, Analyze, and Evaluate.
After a boy named Dill arrived in Maycomb County and became friends with Scout and Jem, the two siblings told many stories about their place including the creepy rumors about their neighbor. “The more we told Dill about the Radleys, the more he wanted to know, the longer he would stand hugging the light-pole on the corner, the more he would wonder.” After Jem and Scout told a lot of scary stories about the Radleys to Dill, he became more curious about this family’s activities. In this quote, the narrator keeps repeating the word “the more”. This emphasizes that Dill is super curious about the Radleys and seems to be longing so much to know more about them. From this quote I can imagine a small boy standing by a light pole in the corner of the street looking curiously at a house ahead of him days after days. This quote is significant because it shows a really strong curiosity of Scout’s friend. This quote makes it seems like Dill will try many things in order to appease his inquisitiveness and I can predict it might lead the three kids into troubles later.
On page 39, the quote that is said by Atticus “If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you will get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view”. With what Atticus had said, I can know that he knows a lot about the society and the people better than Scout. More than this, this quote means that if you learn better about people and knows the trick or a bit about what the people think you would easily get along with their thoughts and ideas. We would not understand what the people are thinking unless we learn from his or her narrator point of view. This quote is really essential in our life because to have no conflict with those folks we should better to understand their point of view on something even it makes you feel like you are doing something wrong to learn a trick about someone. However, to get along with one another we should learn from their personalities like being a friend with each other. You can get along because you know each other feeling and views.
I agree with your qoute analysis, but I recommend that you should also include how this quote later impact on Sout. As I continue to read, I can see that Scout remebers what her dad told her about trying to consider other people point of view, so she tries to understand Jem's feeling after Jem came from taking his pants from the Radley's fence.
That is correct! Your quote analsis is very great because as I know and have the experiences I know that to get along with our friends or neirghbors we as aperson should learn about their characteristics and how they think so we can have the ideas about his or her.And later on we won't make any problem with them and we can be friends for a long period of time.
You know what Sophy I like to agree with you that if we want to know someone very well we need to be able to understand about the simple trick that those person have so that means you can get along with them. If we want to know about someone feeling or ideas we need to understand that person view inorder to get along with them.
After Jeremy Finch or Jem for short had touched the Radley’s house there was “almost invisible movement and the house was still” which was stated on page 19, on the last paragraph toward the end. This meant that there was a tiny almost seen movement in the house after Jem touched the house as a part of their game. The word choice that the author used in this sentence of “ almost invisible” emphasized that there was a movement in the house after the house was being touch by the boy, but the movement was so small that people can’t really see it but it happened. The tone that this sentence conveyed was scary because the thing that moved to induce the movement was very power that they can produce such a movement that was hard to be seen by people if they didn't observe it carefully. This is a significant quote to the rest of the novel because this is an example of foreshadowing. This gave the hint and clue to the readers that in the Radley’s’ house there were people living and Boo Radley was still alive and lived in the house. If there weren’t anyone in the house then it meant that there wouldn't be any movement in the house at all even after there were people touching it. The strength of the boy touching the wall of the house wasn't strong enough to cause movement in the house. Therefore, there must be someone who was living in the house.
On page 15 the last paragraph it is quoted that” the more we told Dill about the Radleys, the more he wanted to know ,the longer he would stand hugging the light- pole on the corner, the more he would wonder.” From this quote analysis, it meant that when Scout and Jem told Dill about the Radley’s family he would think and tried to ask for more information about the Radleys. In this quote the author used to tell the tone toward the events. This showed that the author was doubt or be suspicious about the legend of the Radley’s family. Also the author wanted to know the event happening in the house. In addition to this, the author imparted the mood of the audiences as they read the story. It make the readers to wonder why Dill was so curious about the Radleys and why he thought a lot about them. This quote is significant because it tell us about the kind of person he is and his characteristics.
On page 33 starting from “Hush your mouth...eats in the kitchen”. During this time period, Walter Cunningham had come to the Finch family in order to have lunch together. In that time Walter Cunningham had been filling up the food with the syrup during eating. When Jean saw that Walter Cunningham spilt the food with the syrup, she was angry with Walter and said loudly to him. When Calpurnia the cook heard that she had called Jean to the kitchen and talk to her. Based on this saying here I think that Calpurnia wanted Jean to be respectful to her guest that comes to their house. In this context, I can know the tone that Calpurnia is making that she was very serious and she meant it to be true. This could show us the characteristic of the character that she was very serious. In addition I think that the use of imagination help me to imagine about the part where I can see the part where she said angrily to Scout and also about the part where she was in the kitchen and I can also smell the food. This quote was very significant because in this quote it could help us to understand about the character that she going to help Jean in the story to be a very good person because of the advice that she had given to Jean.
On page 54, when Jem, Scout, and Dill played with a tire near the Radley’s house, Scout stated, “Throughout the head-shaking, quelling of nausea and Jem yelling, I heard another sound, so low I could not have heard it from the sidewalk. Somebody inside the house was laughing”. This quote means that Scout had heard the sound of somebody that was laughing inside the house-and that house belonged to the monstrous Radley family. In this statement, the author used imagery as a tool to grab the reader’s attentions, where he described the faint laugh from the ghostly house, and we could visualize Scout, being dizzy and horror-struck, as the sound pervaded the air-but only her that heard it. I believe that this quote was very important to the rest of the novel, because apart from being interesting, this statement also acts as a foreshadowing. Knowing that there were people laughing inside the house, a sharp curiosity would blink up upon our head, so the readers could conclude that the Radleys might be doing something fun. Something great must be occurring inside this house!
When Scout shout at Walter that he poured all the syrup over his food, Calpurnia told her that “There some folks who don’t eat like us, “she whispered fiercely, “but you ain’t called on to contradict’ em at the table when they don’t. That boy’s yo’ comp’ny and if he wants to eat up the table cloth you let him, you hear” (page 32; last paragraph). This quotes that Calpurnia yell to Scout means that whatever Walter want to do or eat, Scout should let him do it without telling him that he put all the honey over his food because he is her guest that Jem had invited to eat at home. This phrase contains imagery because we could see Calpurnia whispered at Scout angrily in the kitchen and able to hear her accent which it has a lot of errors which show that she is really angry until she can’t pronounce words correctly. In addition, the quote had contained a mood because when we read this phrase, we are able to feel the anger from Calpurnia and feel bad for Scout because Scout’s housekeeper who is Calpurnia shout at her. This quote is important because it teach us that we should be quiet and respectful when other people come to eat at our places. This show that Scout would change her behavior from being talkative and never think deep enough to a girl that know about others and respects others because Calpurnia had teach her the lesson when Walter come to eat at her house.
On page 15, When Jean is describing about the Radley’s family with the problems that is going around like Boo Radley was being a criminal and about his father who locked his son for many years without letting him out, Calpurnia states that “There goes the meanest man ever God blew breathe into”. This means that Calpurnia is saying badly about Boo Radley as a man who is so bad that he can hurt his parents and his father who is so mean to his son by locking him in the house for many years and that God shouldn’t make them alive on Earth as this cruel person. In this quote, I can find a metaphor when Calpurnia said “…blew breath into” and this means that God should not have let this person survive or make this person born in the world. Other metaphor that I can find in this poem is “… the meanest man…” and this means that the man is so bad and cruel. This quote is important because it shows about Calpurnia judging the white man as a bad person and cruel that god should never gave birth into. Also, this can show about Calpurnia trait as a character and it is important to the rest of the story and how she would behave in the future of the story.
On page 28, when Scout said that Ms. Caroline made Walter felt ashamed, Ms. Caroline said that “You’re starting off on the very wrong foot in every way, my dear.” With this, Ms. Caroline wanted to say that Scout began with the wrong foot in everything that she did so far. Through the using of metaphor, the author compares “how Scout started her studying” to “how Scout used her wrong foot”. This emphasizes that Scout did not do the correct things at all which was like she used the wrong foot to move or do something. In other words, she started her studying in the wrong way. With the use of this metaphor, it seems like the things that Scout did not make Ms. Caroline feel happy at all. It shows that Scout was totally in the wrong class. For example, Scout was able to read and write when Ms. Caroline did not teach her yet. This made her became different from other students in the class because she went a head of them already, which can affect Ms. Caroline’s way of teaching. Also, Scout became guiltier for her misbehavior when she told that Ms. Caroline made Walter felt embarrassed without explained much about it. This was not a good thing for student to say to their teacher. I think this quote is really important because it makes us realize that in the community that Scout lived in didn’t really value education much at all. I can draw this conclusion base on the fact that Ms. Caroline said that it was not correct that a child was able to read at home, which is totally different from our society right now. Also, it shows us that Scout faced problem already, even though she just started her first school year. Therefore, I expect that there are more challenges between her and the people in the society that she needed to go through, leading to the climax of the story.
To Kill Mockingbird “They come for the first day every year and leaves “page: 35(chapter 3) This quote from this page is important because it links to this book and society in real life. Burris Ewell is the boy that comes for the first day of the year then leaves and this influence our main character because when Jean knows that the boy does not go to school, she does not want to go too. This seem to be the shift of this story because she goes to Atticus and claims that she does not want to go to school because the school condition is not good because even she knows how to read her teacher feels bad and upset. If there is not compromise and if her father allow her to stop, or if she does not go school, the tide of the story would change automatically because it will not match with the other quote that describes Scouts loves to read and this reflect to the author loves to read the book as breathing. So if Scouts decides to stop study she would not become intelligence girl. Also, this manifest about the world the people that don’t care about the education and we can draw conclusion in they would live in poverty because “the knowledge is a powerful weapon that help to kill poverty”.
One day, when Jeans told Atticus that he didn’t want to go to school because he wasn’t feeling well, didn’t like Ms. Caroline, and was bored, Atticus stated that “if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from point of his view (p.39)” Based on this quote; he meant that if Jeans could learn and know about all kinds of people, he wouldn’t be antisocial. However, Jeans would get along with them well and understand about one kind of a person if he learned from their determination. The tone in this quote revealed that it was in a serious and important circumstance. It showed that Jeans needed to investigate about every person carefully. This impacted her throughout the story because she might be having conflicts with other characters like when she felt into an argument with Francis. Additionally, through the word choice that Atticus used like “point of view” demonstrated that knowing about other character’s thought or point of view was one remedy which helped Jeans to understand about the others and get along with them. Like Jean, she knew well about her father who didn’t want her to get in a fighting because of him. From this, she listened and followed what he had told, so she got along well with him.
After returning from her first day in school, Jean Louis Finch (Scout) had told her father, Mr. Atticus that she didn’t want to go to school again, because of Ms. Caroline. Her father, in return, said “Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” This quote is pointing out that the only way to get along better with other is to gain an understanding on how that person think and view the world. This quote advises us to put ourselves in other shoes in order to evaluate someone. In this statement, the author had use metaphor and compares “into his skin” to the gaining the internal insight of a person. This shows that a person is covered. We will never be able to see their internal-selves, or what they actually think, and why they conduct themselves, unless we look beyond their skin and into their heart. This quote is really significant because later onto, Jean started to change. Once she tried to look into Jem’s skin and see why he is so quiet. Later on, we can conclude that Jean will get along better with other since after her father’s advice, she always try to understand other.
On Page 39, When Scout asked her father if it was okay for her to stop going to school and Atticus said that, “If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view.” The quote means that if we can trick people we can get along with them very well. More than that we can’t know what kind of the person is until we learn things from their point of view. This quote shows the tone of the author that the author feels that knowing about other people point of view is very important because we can understand what kind of a person they are, and how they react to different circumstances in the society. In addition in order to get along well with the people in the society we have to learn how to trick them. For example if we didn’t like the person behaviors, we can trick them that we like what they did in order to get along with them. It is better to get along with many people than making a lot enemy. The author use symbolism which is “learn things from their point of view”. This refers to what kind of person is and how they react toward the others. This is a very significant because it shows the characteristic of Atticus of how he care about his daughter and how he analyses what kind of a person is.
When Scout and her father were discussing about the problems that Scout faced at school and how she couldn’t get along with Mrs. Caroline, Atticus said “First of all if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kind of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view---until you climb into his skin and walk around it.” What Atticus is trying to tell Scout was that Scout needed to learn some ways so that she can get along with people very well. He said that Scout couldn’t know how the person feels unless she looks at the thing from their perspective by putting herself in their situation. For Scout to get along with other people like Miss Caroline first she needed to find some ways to get along with them. Repetition was actually in Atticus words. He told Scout to find ways to get along with people, but in the quote he offered a solution to her. The solution is that Scout needed to put herself in other people shoes. This means that Scout needed to consider things from the person of view so that she could know how they feel. For example, Miss Caroline doesn’t want her to read at home because it is the law of the school so it is necessary to do what the law asks to do. For Scout to get along with Miss Caroline she must also follow the rules and do what the teacher asked. This adjustment allows both of them to view thing from the same perspective which means they can have a good relationship with each other. This is important because once Scout have this skill later in the novel she could have good relationship with other people and can understand how they feel which would be the solution to the climax.
